About the University

Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has come into existence by an Act of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly called the Jammu & Kashmir Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Act No. XVI of 2002. The university is nurtured by the Jammu & Kashmir Wakf Council. The motto of the university is “Iqra bismi Rabbik alladi Khalaq” which means, “Read in the name of God who has created all that exists”. It reflects the vision and idealism for which the university stands. The objective identified for the university in the Act is to impart quality education and undertake research in basic and job oriented fields. Accordingly, the university has launched postgraduate teaching programmes in Business Management, Financial Management, Computer Sciences, Information Technology, Arabic, Applied Mathematics and B. Tech in Electronics and Communication, Computer Sciences & Engineering and Information Technology.

The university campus is located at the foothills of the great Himalayan Pir Panjal range in Rajouri, 154 Km from Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir state. Regular bus service, video-coaches and shared taxies meandering their way by the sparkling streams through the thick-pine forests make the 3½ hours journey between Jammu & Rajouri a mesmerizing experience.
 

The region in which the university is located has rich geographic, climatic and cultural diversity. The climate varies from subtropical in the southern parts to temperate in montane northern fringes. The average temperature varies from 7ºc during winters to 37ºc during summers. The average annual rainfall is 500 mm. The snow-capped peaks of the mighty Himalaya, rich biodiversity and valuable agri-diversity make entire Rajouri-Poonch region a nature lover's paradise.

The teaching programmes designed by various Academic bodies of the university are interactive, flexible and hands on; directed towards helping learners to gain the ability to confidently and effectively answer real life challenges.

 Amenities for Students: The University offers following amenities to its students

Branch Offices: Besides its main campus at Rajouri the university has established branch offices at Srinagar and Jammu for liaising with students of these divisions and facilitating their admission, interviews, entrance tests etc.

Internet: All teaching departments and the hostel have been provided Internet facility through V-Sat and dedicated RF-Link with 1 Mbps speed. Individual connectivity is available to faculty members which enables them and the students to keep abreast with latest developments in their respective fields.

Canteen: The campus has more than one canteen with provision for lunch, tea, soft drinks and snacks. The catering service has been outsourced to ensure quality. Their upkeep, hygiene and the quality of service are monitored by a committee. The canteens keep open till late for students sitting late in library and laboratories.
 

Scholarships: Sixty percent of the total students who get enrolled for various courses of study in a session are awarded handsome scholarships by different agencies of the State and Central Governments. This is perhaps the highest incentive any institution of higher learning in the State offers to its students.

Physical Education: The university has developed a large playground with provision for outdoor games. The hilly terrain of the campus provides ideal setting for trekking, hiking, rock climbing and allied activities.

Extra curricular activities: For overall personality development, students' participation in quiz programmes, singing, mimicry, debates, poetry recitation and similar other activities are encouraged and regular inter and intra departmental competitions are held on the campus.

In-Campus Hostel: Excellent hostel facilities are available on the campus for boys as well as girls. The hostel with homely environment, well furnished and well ventilated rooms, is located in eco-friendly, pollution free scenic setting on a flat stretch of land vanishing into ascendant chain of pine-covered hills with a gurgling and foaming brook in the front. Facilities, like computer room with Internet connectivity, 24 hrs power supply, indoor games, common room, canteen service, water cooler with purifier etc are the other features of the hostel. The hostel mess is clean and economical. It is run by a committee of boarders with fixed term on rotational basis.
 

Shopping Mall: The Campus has a shopping mall which meets routine requirements of resident students, at reasonable rates and saves their time, money and energy.

Bank and Post Office: A branch of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank operates from within the Campus and provides efficient service to its clients. The students also avail the facility of branch post-office whose timing synchronizes with that of the University.

Dispensary: The University maintains well-equipped dispensary with a qualified House surgeon, technical and nursing staff. The services of the Doctor are available to students free of cost.

Bus Service: Regular bus service, on nominal charges, operates between the Campus and Rajouri town for the convenience of students.

Teachers availability: Almost entire faculty of the University lives on the Campus which makes it easy for students to interact with them even in late hours.

Reservation of Seats: To meet its social obligations the University has made special provision for admission of children of the socially disadvantaged people. Seats have been reserved for them in all the Departments.
