Sidho Kanho Birsha University started its voyage on 6th July, 2010 - the day assent of the Governor was first published in the Kolkata Gazette. Slated to be situated in Purulia, the western-most district of Bengal, this University is the culmination of a long-cherished dream of the people of Purulia, who had for years nurtured an innate desire to have their own center of excellence, styled and molded in tune with its geographical location and demographic set up. With a view to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning, this University will foster and promote higher education with special emphasis on the study of indigenous languages as well as culture and rural development.

In a tribal-dominated drought-prone area considered as a backward district with marginalized milieu constituting a major buck of the entire population, the curricula and syllabi need to be framed keeping in mind the requirements of the local against a larger backdrop of national and global scenario. Founded in the first half of the twenty first century which had already witnessed the conquest of the galaxy by the insurmountable power of man, Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University aspires to be a role model of the Universities situated at the remotest corners of this vast country. The kaleidoscopic unison effected between the rich cultural heritage of the district and technological advancement of the age will pave the way of a citadel of learning which will cater to the academic requirement of people emerging from different socioeconomic strata and indisputably the so-called denigrated. The legislative act for establishment of the University was enacted on 06/07/2010 and the First Vice-Chancellor Dr. Tapati Mukherjee joined on 01/11/2010. Nearly 13 acres of land was donated by Jagannath Kishore College, Purulia, with a rare benevolent mission aiming at establishment of a center of Higher Learning which will conform to the concept of knowledge as a means of emancipation — "sa vidya ya vimuktaye".
