WBUAFSCE

West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences

Founded: 1995

HISTORY:
The livestock and fisheries sectors are fast developing in the Country for which the pressure on land is massive in inclined state all over the India. During, 2008-2010, the livestock and fisheries sectors contributed approximately 5% of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 27% value of the output from agriculture, animal husbandry and allied ventures. Livestock production has been growing faster than any agricultural sub-sector and it is foreseen by 2020, the livestock will account for more than half of total global agricultural output in economic terms. To reach the growth rate of 4% in the agriculture sector as envisaged in the XI plan, the growth in livestock and other allied sectors becomes much essential. To attain this, varieties of technological interventions were introduced in these sectors in the country, which paved the way for significant improvement in productivity and production and also per capita availability of livestock products.
The State of West Bengal has the potential to enhance the livestock productivity with accelerated application of innovative technologies. The state is producing 4 million tones of milk per annum besides having 61 million poultry, 18.8 million goats and 1.3 million pigs. Also, West Bengal has emerged as the highest fish producing (1.5 million tones) state in the country including the production of 1.26 metric tones inland fishes. As most of the state farmers are small and marginal in their activities and reasonably, it is the livestock and fish, which could surely help the farming population for improvement of their livelihood. The efforts of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries are well known by their contribution to the general economy of West Bengal in terms of production. Growth in human population, increase in urbanization, rising domestic incomes and changing lifestyles have led to increased demand for products of animal origin. The West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences has already set the goal in this direction and doing its best through its educational programmes and research activities and its subsequent dissemination of package of practices to rural farming community.

The West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS), the second University of its kind in the country started its journey with a legacy of Century old Bengal Veterinary College on 2nd January 1995 with an objective to serve the State as well as the nation as a whole through imparting quality Education, accomplishing basic and need-based Research and disseminating proven technologies to the rural masses through its Extension wing.

West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences was established on 2nd January, 1995 vide West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences Act - 1995 to impart education, training and to conduct research in veterinary and animal sciences, dairy sciences and fishery sciences and also to cater the needs of the farming community of the State of West Bengal. During this period the University has been recognized as one of the leading institutions of the country to uplift the socioeconomically status of farmers. The hallmark of the University has been the development of human resources to meet the requirements of the society and to promote the socioeconomic development of the region. The University has been engaged in commendable task of improving the research infrastructure to develop cutting edge technologies for improved management of animal and fishery resources, disease problems, nutrients, water resources and environment. Significant achievement has been made to improve the research activities with the funds made available from State and Central Governments and non-government organizations. There are three faculties in this University viz. (1) Faculty of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (B.V.Sc. & AH, M.V.Sc. & Ph.D. courses) (2) Faculty of Dairy Technology (B.Tech.(DT), M.Tech. (DT) and M.Sc. (Dairying) and Ph.D. courses) and (3) Faculty of Fishery Sciences (B.F.Sc., M.F.Sc. courses). The research, extension and farm activities of the University are organized through the Directorate of Research, Extension & Farms of the University. Various research programmes have been running since 1995 under the aegis of the said Directorate I joined the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences as Vice-Chancellor on 7th August, 2006. I fervently hope that in the coming years we will get more opportunities to expand our educational and research activities in the national and international arena. Our faculty members have already proved this by getting international fellowships, awards and have also been invited to present their papers in the international congress, symposium and conferences. I am confident that with the co-operation of all concerned I would be able to take this University to its new height.

Bengal Engineering & Science University>Howrah>West Bengal

HISTORY:
BENGAL ENGINEERING & SCIENCE UNIVERSITY, HOWRAH, WEST BENGAL
Enrollment: 2,877 (2010)
Founded: 1856

BESU
Bengal Engineering and Science University owes its origin to the erstwhile Bengal Engineering College, the history of which goes to the nineteenth century when industries in the sense we understand today, were practically absent. Prompted by the idea of meeting requirement of trained engineering personnel for the Public Works Department, the then council of Education, Bengal, decided to open Civil Engineering classes and a Professorship in Civil Engineering. A college was established on 24 November 1856 named Calcutta Civil Engineering College, training personnel for the Public Works Department, and located at the Writers' Building, Howrah. With the establishment of Calcutta University on January 24, 1857, the college was affiliated to this university in May 1857. The first degree examination in Bachelors of Civil Engineering was held in 1864 in which only 2 students graduated. In 1865, the college merged with Presidency College, Kolkata and from 1865 to 1869 the college functioned as the Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College. In 1880, the college was shifted to its present campus at Shibpur, Howrah, and was christened the Government College, Howrah, in the premises of Bishop's College.[3] The college became wholly residential from the year 1889.

BESU
In 1906 Mining Engineering as a discipline was first started in India in this college to meet the requirements of statutory provision in Indian mines. After the establishment of the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad in 1926, the entire infrastructure of this department was shifted. However, after independence, Dr. B. C. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, took personal interest in revamping the department to satisfy the growing demand of qualified mining professionals, and the Department of Mining & Geology was reborn in 1956.

On 12 February 1920 the name was changed to Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur. The word Shibpur was deleted on 24 March 1921 and it became Bengal Engineering College.

BESU
The Department of Electrical Engineering came into existence as a separate department from the year 1912. The B.E. degree course was introduced during the year 1935-36 with the first batch obtaining the degree from Calcutta University in 1936.

The inception of the Mechanical Engineering Department may be traced back to 1921 when a diploma course in Mechanical Engineering was started in this Institute. The first degree course in Mechanical Engineering was started from 18 July 1930.

The Department of Metallurgy started its journey at the Bengal Engineering College in the year 1939 with the introduction of a 3 year degree course in Metallurgy under the Calcutta University. The department is the second oldest metallurgy department of the country.

[Passed by the West Bengal Legislature]

Fully funded by Govt. of West Bengal

Sidho Kanho Birsha University started its voyage on 6th July, 2010 - the day assent of the Governor was first published in the Kolkata Gazette. Slated to be situated in Purulia, the western-most district of Bengal, this University is the culmination of a long-cherished dream of the people of Purulia, who had for years nurtured an innate desire to have their own center of excellence, styled and molded in tune with its geographical location and demographic set up. With a view to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning, this University will foster and promote higher education with special emphasis on the study of indigenous languages as well as culture and rural development.

In a tribal-dominated drought-prone area considered as a backward district with marginalized milieu constituting a major buck of the entire population, the curricula and syllabi need to be framed keeping in mind the requirements of the local against a larger backdrop of national and global scenario. Founded in the first half of the twenty first century which had already witnessed the conquest of the galaxy by the insurmountable power of man, Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University aspires to be a role model of the Universities situated at the remotest corners of this vast country. The kaleidoscopic unison effected between the rich cultural heritage of the district and technological advancement of the age will pave the way of a citadel of learning which will cater to the academic requirement of people emerging from different socioeconomic strata and indisputably the so-called denigrated. The legislative act for establishment of the University was enacted on 06/07/2010 and the First Vice-Chancellor Dr. Tapati Mukherjee joined on 01/11/2010. Nearly 13 acres of land was donated by Jagannath Kishore College, Purulia, with a rare benevolent mission aiming at establishment of a center of Higher Learning which will conform to the concept of knowledge as a means of emancipation — "sa vidya ya vimuktaye".

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University Belur Math>Howrah>West Bengal

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University Belur Math
BRIEF INTRODUCTION:
Swami Vivekananda established Ramakrishna Mission as commanded by his Master, Sri Ramakrishna, for the secular and spiritual amelioration of humankind as a whole, irrespective of caste, creed, color, nationality, gender or religion. The twofold aim of the Ramakrishna Mission is, in Swami Vivekananda's own Sanskrit slogan, atmano mokshartham jagaddhitaya cha ("For one's own spiritual emancipation and for the welfare of the world"). To achieve this aim at both the individual and the collective level, he established the Ramakrishna Mission, by which he "set in motion a machinery which will bring noble ideas to the door of everybody." Swamiji envisioned it as "a lever for the good of humanity…which no power can drive back." Swami Vivekananda made Belur Math the headquarters of the worldwide Ramakrishna Movement, comprising the twin organizations of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. He envisioned that Belur Math would be a centre of great harmony and synthesis, not only of all religious beliefs and traditions, but also of arts and sciences and the various branches of knowledge, both secular and spiritual. In fact, on 2 July 1902, just two days before he passed away, he prophesied, standing at the Belur Math grounds: "The spiritual impact that has come to Belur [Math] will last fifteen hundred years, and it will be a great University. Do not think I imagine it; I see it."

It is apparent that Swami Vivekananda's conception of a "University" is a centre where 'man-making' and character-building education would be imparted, higher values would be inculcated and all-round personalities would be formed. His own conception of a complete, all-round personality was one with "heart to feel, brain to conceive and hands to work".

Swamiji's emphasis on character as the hallmark of an educated person is well known. He emphasized times without number that education is not the "amount of information that is put into your brain" but the "life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas." In 1939, the Governing Body of Ramakrishna Mission took a small step in this direction by starting an institution of higher education near Belur Math called Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira . The name 'Vidyamandira' is Swamiji's own christening of the educational institution he wanted near Belur Math. Then, in 1963, Swami Vivekananda's birth centenary year, the authorities of Ramakrishna Mission submitted a proposal to the Government for the starting of the Vivekananda University. For various reasons, however, the university did not materialize at that time. Efforts in this direction were made off and on in subsequent years until finally, a deemed university under University Grants Commission (UGC) was established under Ramakrishna Mission's auspices.

Founded: 1962

INTRODUCTION OF RABINDRA BHARATI UNIVERSITY:
Rabindra Bharati University, was founded on May 8, 1962 under the Rabindra Bharati Act to mark the birth centenary of poet Rabindranath Tagore at his residential house at Calcutta for the advancement of learning and culture particularly in the branches of music, dance and drama. Assent of the President of India to the Rabindra Bharati Act passed by the Legislature of West Bengal, was first published in the Calcutta Gazette, Extra ordinary, of the 10th January, 1962. After the death of Rabindranath Tagore, the house belonging to Gaganendranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore on the south-west side of the main building was purchased by a private party. Late Suresh Chandra Majumdar on behalf of Rabindra Bharati Society collected from public around Rs. 15 Lakhs and part of the money was paid to the private party to acquire the property as stated above. In the meanwhile the private party went to the High Court for enhancement of the award and the party was given additional award of Rs. 3 Lakhs by the court. As Suresh Chandra Majumdar was facing severe fund crisis, he asked the West Bengal Government to release suitable grant. An agreement was signed between the Government and Rabindra Bharati Society and as a condition of the grant, the Government was given the right to use Rabindra Bharati property for use of its proposed Dance, Drama and Music Institute. Accordingly, the Institute, namely West Bengal State Akademy of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts (present name) was established in 1955. Uday Shankar, Ahindra Chowdhury and Ramesh Banerjee were put in charge of Dance, Drama and Music respectively. Uday Shankar subsequently left the Institute. In 1959, it was felt that the Government of West Bengal would establish a University as a memorial to Rabindranath. Since the original purpose of Rabindra Bharati Society was also the development Dance, Drama and Music, the general body of the Rabindra Bharati Society met and agreed that it should be merged with proposed university. The Government of West Bengal was further contemplating to celebrate birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore. The Government thought that the best way to perpetuate the memory of Rabindranath tagore would be to acquire the family dwellings and utilize them for the purpose of establishing a university and persuaded Rathindranath Tagore to hand over the buildings including the room where Rabindranath Tagore breathed his last. In was also arranged that Viswa-Bharati publication division would vacate their occupied portion at “Bichitra” bhawan. Other than the famous Jorasanko Campus, the university have Emerald Bower Campus situated at B.T.Road in the historic “Emerald Bower” building built in early 1820s. The University was reconstituted in 1981 by the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981. The objective of the University also changed as stated here: “Whereas it is expedient to reconstitute the University known as Rabindra Bharati to encourage in conformity with the ideas and thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore, the integration of cultural heritage of the nation consistent with its lingustic and socio-economic history and to enable it to function more efficiently as a University encouraging and providing for instruction, teaching, training and research in various branches of learning and course of study, promoting advancement and dissemination of knowledge and learning and extending higher education , to meet the growing needs of society and to make the constitution of various authorities or bodies o the University more democratic;”

With its proximity to the southern most sweep of the Himalaya and to the Bay of Bengal, the North Bengal region plays a critical role in the formation and circulation of the South West monsoon system. Heavy precipitation and runoff near the Himalayan ranges has led to the undulating topography of the region and to the formation of vast floodplains around the rivers of the Gangs-Brahmaputra interfile which drain the region. Of these , the principal rivers flow within the Tista basin.

History

National Council of Education, Bengal
The first university in modern India was setup by the British in Calcutta in 1861 as a means of spreading western philosophical thought among the elite in India and to create in the words of Lord Macaulcay, “a class of Indians who would be Indian in blood and colour but western in thought and ideas.” This initiative was furthered by the passing of the Universities Act of 1904. This resulted in the reorganization of the Calcutta University’s Senate and Syndicate by the nomination of more white members into them, which in turn would enable the government to control its policies. The government also decided to disaffiliate many private Indian colleges, which had come up lately and were regarded by the Government as hot beds of nationalist agitation. The measures stirred the educated middle class to move for alternative systems of education.
The nationalists in the freedom struggle of India dubbed Calcutta University, another pillar of India’s education movement, as “Goldighir Ghulamkhana”, or the slave house of Goldighi, with reference to the lake adjacent to Calcutta University, and the number of graduates it churned out who were used in British merchant offices as clerks. Hence, the need for setting up an institution which would impart education along nationalist lines was strongly felt by the luminaries of the period. The real impetus though was provided by the partition of Bengal by Lord Curzon, the Governor-General of India, into East Bengal on the one hand (the area that was eventually to become Bangladesh in 1971) and West Bengal and Orissa on the other. On 16 November 1905, the Landholders Society organized a meeting at Park Street, attended by 1500 delegates, including Rabindranath Tagore, Aurobindo Ghosh, Raja Subodh Chandra Mullick and Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury. The idea of the National Council of Education was mooted here. In a meeting held on 9 November 1905 at the Field and Academic Club, Subodh Chandra Mullick pledged Rupees one lakh for the foundation of a National University in Bengal. The objective in setting up the institution that was to challenge the British rule over education by offering education to the masses 'on national lines and under national control'. Generous sums of money were also donated by Brojendra Kishore Roy Choudhury, Maharaja Suryya Kanto Acharya Choudhury and Rashbihari Ghosh, who was appointed the first president of the university.

Jadavpur University
The two organisations fought it out for a few years until the SPTE was amalgamated with the NCE in 1910 and the Bengal Technical Institute passed into its hands. In 1921 the Institute became the first in India to introduce Chemical Engineering as a discipline. By 1940, the institute had outgrown itself as more than just a small institute and was virtually functioning as an independent university.
Post Independence period and formation of Jadavpur University
After Indian Independence in 1947, the West Bengal State Legislature, with the concurrence of the Government of India, enacted the Jadavpur University Act, 1955 to convert the institute into Jadavpur University with full autonomy on (December 24, 1955). Since then the university has observed this date in its calendar as Convocation Day.
Jadavpur University has had its share of ups and downs since its formation as an autonomous university. On the one hand, this period has seen the university’s growth as one of the foremost centres of the excellence in the country, while on the other, this period has also seen it being affected by naxalite violence that claimed, among others, the life of Prof. Gopal Chandra Sen, who was the vice chancellor of the university at the time of his death.

Emblem
Javadpur University Kolkata
The emblem of the university is a three-flamed lamp encircled by lotus petals. The lamp represents knowledge. The three flames represent Intellectual Training, Cultivation of Emotions and Imagination, and Spiritual Development. Petals of the lotus on the periphery represent Fine Arts and Culture. It was designed by Nandalal Bose, a key member of the Bengal School of Art, who was one of the great masters at Kala Bhavan in Rabindranath Tagore's Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. As the university celebrated its Golden Jubilee on December 24, 2005, a special emblem (see above) was created to commemorate the occasion, and the motto 'To Know Is To Grow' was coined. This date was also the centenary of the National Council of Education.

Jadavpur Campus
The main campus of Jadavpur University is bordered by the Raja S.C. Mullick Road, the Jadavpur Station Road, the Kolkata Suburban Rail, South Line and the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR India). The present campus was first leased to the NCE in 1922 by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation when Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das was the mayor. On 11 March 1922 the foundation stone of Aurobindo Bhavan, which is currently the main administrative centre of the university, was laid. The seat of engineering was shifted to the Aurobindo Bhavan in 1924 when the building was completed.
Javadpur University Kolkata
The Jadavpur campus houses most of the departments of the three faculties — Engineering, Science and Arts — in addition to the Jadavpur University Central Library and the Blue Earth Workshop. It is adjacent to research institutes like the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology and the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute. The architecture of the campus is typical sub–continental in nature with flat-roof rectangular plans. Some of the older buildings, especially in the engineering faculty and the Aurobindo Bhavan in particular, have a strong Bengali influence which can be seen in the design of the pillars and even the wooden doors and windows.

Landmarks on the main campus

Some of the prominent landmarks on the engineering side include the Blue Earth Workshop — which, in addition to being among the foremost centers of learning techniques in workshop technology, also has the dubious distinction of having been used by students affected by the naxalite violence to manufacture blow guns, the “gachchtola”, the “jheel paar”, ashirwad canteen ( now converted into the SURUCHI canteen), the windmill and the “green zone”.

On the arts and science side, some of the prominent landmarks include the English department “ledge”, the “Bhanga Bridge”, worldview bookstore, Open Air Theatre and “Milan Da’s” canteen.

Salt Lake City Campus

The Salt Lake City Campus is a newer campus and was setup after it was felt that the space on the main campus was insufficient to meet the demands of setting up departments for emerging fields of study. It is a 28 acre campus in LB block, Salt Lake just off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near the Chingrighata crossing. It is surrounded by many renowned educational institutes like The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata and Government college of Engineering and leather technology along with the Headquarters of the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited. Five engineering departments operate out of the campus — Information Technology, Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering, Printing Engineering, Construction Engineering and Power Engineering. It also houses the School of Mobile Computing and Communication, a Library, the administrative block (KMR) and a hostel complex for out-station students. The main ground at the Salt Lake campus has been leased out to the Cricket Association of Bengal and it often plays host to inter- and intrastate cricket matches.

National Instruments Limited Campus
The new National Instruments Limited Campus

Jadavpur University has recently acquired the erstwhile National Instruments Limited (CSIR), becoming the first Indian university to acquire such a research unit. It is on a nine-acre plot opposite the main campus. After renovation, the new campus is expected to add much-needed space for new laboratories especially for the Departments of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering. The NIL campus is to be connected to the main campus by an underground tunnel to bypass the traffic on the busy Raja S.C. Mullick Road.

Affiliated institutes

In addition to being a unitary university, it has other institutes like the Jawahari Devi Birla Institute of Commerce and Management, Jadavpur Vidyapith as well as the Institute of Business Management affiliated to it, which operate out of independent campuses. While these institutes have their own independent curriculum as well as examination systems, the final degree is offered by Jadavpur University.

Faculty housing

Unlike most universities which provide accommodation to faculty and staff on campus, due to a shortage of space, faculty housing is provided in the campus as well in nearby areas. This includes housing in areas like Santoshpur and Tollygunge.
Jadavpur University Press and publication house

Jadavpur University Press

The university press publishes all documents of record in the university including PhD theses, question papers and journals. On 26 October 2010 the institution announced plans to launch a publication house, named Jadavpur University Press. The main focus of the publication house will be to publish textbooks and thesis written by research scholars and authors from all universities. The first two titles of JUP were launched on February 1, 2012 at the Calcutta Book Fair. The two titles were Rajpurush (translation of Niccolo Machiavelli's Il Principe); translated by Doyeeta Majumder, with an introduction by Swapan Kumar Chakravorty, and Shilpachinta (translation of selections from Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks); translated by Sukanta Chaudhuri. Both books were translated from the original Italian.

Administration and organization

Jadavpur University is an autonomous state university. The governor of the state of West Bengal is its chancellor. However, the daily administration is handled under the leadership of the vice chancellor, who is appointed by the governor on the recommendations of the government of West Bengal. The vice chancellor is assisted in his duties by the pro vice chancellor who is de facto a senior faculty member of faculty of engineering and technology.

Within the university’s administrative structure, the highest body is the university court. It consists of members elected by the staff members of the university from amongst themselves as well as members of the alumni.

Next in hierarchy comes the executive council of the university, which takes all the decisions relating to day to day functioning. It consists of staff and student members from all the three faculties. The student members of the faculties finding representation on the executive council are the chairmen of the three student councils of unions.

The three faculties in turn have their own councils which are changed every four years and differ in their compositions. The engineering faculty for example has members who are nominated either by the vice chancellor or are invited from the various schools functioning under the faculty. The Arts and Science Faculties have member from the affiliated institutes like J.D. Birla in addition to members from the respective faculties. However, a common factor in each of the three faculties is that each department is represented on the council by the Head of the Department and at least one other faculty member of the department.

Outside these councils are the offices of the registrar, finance officer, controller of examinations, university engineer, faculty secretaries, placement coordinator and deans of the three faculties and students welfare which are responsible for the administrative tasks delegated to them. Finally, at the departmental level are the heads of departments.

Academics

Admission to Jadavpur University is highly competitive, as it consistently ranks amongst the best colleges in India.

For admissions to the Engineering Faculty at the undergraduate level, students are admitted through the WBJEE, an entrance examination open to students from all over India. Unlike in a large number of states, there is no domicile quota in JU as well as for the remaining engineering colleges admitting students through the WBJEE. Postgraduate students in engineering are admitted through GATE. Admission to the Arts and Science Faculties is by means of individual examinations for each of the departments at the undergraduate as well as the postgraduate levels. Weight age is given to marks obtained at the higher secondary level for undergraduate admissions at the undergraduate level for postgraduate level.

Schools and Centres of Excellence

To facilitate interdisciplinary learning and research in diverse fields, there are a number of schools and centre for studies. Some of the major research ventures undertaken by these schools include the pioneering work done by the School of Environmental Studies in highlighting the presence of arsenic in groundwater in countries like India and Bangladesh and the development of the first alcohol based car by the School of Automobile Engineering.
